The Regulatory Battle

From compounding pharmacies to the FDA to the Joe Rogan podcast — the story behind the most controversial compounds in health and wellness.

How We Got Here
The regulatory saga of compounded peptides in the United States — from widespread availability to a sudden ban and now a historic reversal.
Pre-2023
Peptides Widely Available via Compounding
Licensed 503A and 503B compounding pharmacies routinely prepared peptides like BPC-157, CJC-1295, and Thymosin Alpha-1 for patients with valid prescriptions. The market grew rapidly as clinics offered compounded versions at lower cost than pharmaceutical alternatives.
September 29, 2023
FDA Drops the Hammer — 19 Peptides Added to Category 2
Without much notice, the FDA placed 19 popular peptides on its Category 2 bulk drug substance list, citing "significant safety risks." This effectively banned compounding pharmacies from preparing these peptides, cutting off legal access for hundreds of thousands of patients virtually overnight.
Late 2023
Industry Pushback & Legal Challenges
Evexias Medical Group and Farmakeio (a compounding pharmacy) sued the FDA, claiming the agency violated proper procedure. The Save Peptides Coalition formed. The compounding industry argued the FDA acted without transparency or opportunity for comment.
September 2024
FDA Removes 5 Peptides from Category 2
The FDA removed CJC-1295, Ipamorelin, Thymosin Alpha-1, AOD-9604, and Selank from Category 2 and sent them to the Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee (PCAC) for review — the first step toward potential Category 1 status.
February 27, 2026
RFK Jr. Announces Reversal on Joe Rogan
On the Joe Rogan Experience podcast (#2461), HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that approximately 14 of the 19 peptides will be moved back to Category 1, making them legal for compounding. He stated the FDA's original ban was illegal because it lacked the required "safety signal."
Coming Soon
Official FDA Announcement Expected
The FDA is expected to formally update its Category lists within weeks of the announcement. The exact list of returning peptides and timeline depends on the agency's official publication.

Always Work With a Licensed Provider

These are powerful compounds — not supplements you pick up at the store. Whether it's enclomiphene for testosterone or BPC-157 for an injury, the safest and most effective path is through a licensed healthcare provider who can evaluate your labs, prescribe appropriately, and monitor your progress. Compounding pharmacies ensure pharmaceutical-grade purity that gray-market sources cannot guarantee.

Lab Work Matters

Before starting any peptide or hormone therapy, baseline blood work is essential. Testosterone, estrogen, IGF-1, metabolic panels, and other markers help your provider determine the right compound, dosage, and protocol for your individual biology. Follow-up labs track your response and catch potential issues early.
